Koutoubia Mosque
The beating heart of Marrakech
The iconic minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque dominates the skyline of Marrakech, standing as a testament to the city's rich history and Almohad architecture. At over 70 meters tall, it remains the tallest building in the city, its rhythmic call to prayer echoing across the medina five times a day. Completed in the 12th century, its beautiful stonework and decorative arches have inspired monuments across the world, including the Giralda in Seville.
Surrounded by vast plaza spaces and beautiful gardens lined with orange trees and rose bushes, it is the perfect place to pause and take in the atmosphere. Though non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the mosque itself, a walk around the lush adjoining gardens is a highlight of any visit, particularly at sunset when the stone is bathed in a warm, golden glow.
